Film & TV deals: Rental and streaming savings

Downloads, DVDs and streaming – here are the best TV and movie deals to help you enjoy a cheap night in!

I’ve hunted out ongoing offers, the best prices to buy DVDs and any short-lived deals.

Streaming deals and free trials

Good movie choices are pretty limited on, but Netflix in particular has some great TV. You can get a 30 day free trial for Netflix & Amazon Prime and a 14 day trial for NOW TV. I’ve compared the different services in my blogpost Nothing on TV? How to choose between Netflix, Amazon Prime and Now TV.

Disney + deals

The new streaming service from Disney launches on 24th March 2020 in the UK. It’ll have all the old Disney movies as well as new series in the worlds of Star Wars and Marvel. It’ll cost £5.99 a month or £59.99 a year.

One year for £49.99

This launch offer is available up until the 24th March, and you can save £10. You are committing to a full year which means you can’t cancel it if you’re bored with the service, can’t find something to watch or go on holiday. It’ll also auto-renew for another year if you don’t cancel before then.

> Sign up to Disney +

Six months free with O2

If you’re new to O2 or upgrading then you can claim six months of Disney+ for free. If you’re not due an upgrade you can add it to your mobile plan (so you’ll pay alongside your bill) at £5.99 a month, and get £2 credited to your bill, effectively meaning you’ll pay £3.99 a month.

> Sign up to Disney+ via O2

NOW TV deals

I love NOW TV, particularly if you want Sky Atlantic but don’t want Sky. There are often some great deals on its streaming packages which I update on this dedicated page.

Netflix deals

There are three pricing options for Netflix: £5.99, £8.99 and £11.99. You can no longer get a free trial.

It’s harder to save with Netflix, but there are a few deals, which I’ve listed on this page.

Amazon Prime Video

Prime Video comes with a standard Amazon Prime membership (£7.99 a month or £79 a year), but it can also be signed up to without all those extras for £5.99 a month.

30-day free trial

If you’re new to Amazon Prime then it’s well worth taking the 30-day free trial. Just make sure you cancel before you get charged the full annual amount. If that does accidentally happen you should contact Amazon ASAP to ask for a refund.

6 months free with EE

EE customers can choose to get six months of Prime Video for free as part of the swappable benefits promotion.

Starzplay for 99p a month

This add-on channel has imports such as Veronica Mars and Castle Rock and normally costs £4.99 a month, but right now you can try it for 99p a month for three months.

Apple TV +

You can get a 7-day free trial of Apple TV +, and it’s then £4.99 a month. It might also be possible to get an annual subscription for £50 once you’ve finished your free trial.

There’s also a free 12 month trial for people who buy a new iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac or Apple TV. These are all very expensive so only buy them if you were planning on anyway, not just to get the year of Apple TV +. You’ll have three months to activate the trial after the date of purchase, or 1st November 2019, whichever is later.

BritBox deals

The new streaming service from ITV and the BBC costs £5.99 a month It’ll mainly have old programmes from these broadcasters though there will be some original programming too.

Six months free if you’re with EE

Cheap movie rental vouchers and offers

Here’s my guide to the cheapest ways to rent movies, including how to get them by post. Below are any current deals I spot.

Amazon Instant Video

This is different to Amazon Prime Video as these are titles not included that you have to rent separately. You have a month to start watching rentals, and then 48 hours once you first press play.

£1.99 new releases for Prime members

Amazon often has new rentals for £1.99 if you’re with Prime. You’ve 30 days to start watching the film.

Chili

in 2019 Chili had lots of offers, and that’s continued in 2020, I assume to help build up a customer base. Rentals last for 28 days before expiring, or 48 hours once you start watching.

Money off codes

Most months, Chili has a code that’ll get you 50% off up to two rentals or purchases, or something similar. I’ll post here when I spot these.

Right now you can save 50% on three rentals or purchases from a specified choice with the code MOTHERSDAY. Ends 31st March 2020.

Free rental via Snatch app (*May have ended)

If you are able to claim this offer still, please let me know as I since I’ve done it myself there’s no way to check it’s still active!

A game called Snatch, a bit like Pokemon Go, is giving away a free Chili rental when people sign up and go through “training”. It launched last week and I signed up to give it a go. It took a couple of minutes to download it to my phone, set it up and complete the tasks required. And once finished, and I opened my parcel, I had a £5.49 credit to use at Chili. You need to add it to your Chili account within a few days, but it remains valid on there until the of the year.

There’s the potential for more prizes, including additional free rentals if you then continue to play the game where you need to collect and then protect virtual parcels. These parcels open after six hours, and you’ll get your reward. However, having tried this for a week, and collected or snatched 73 parcels, I only got one other rental. And all the other offers I got were very poor indeed. So I’m not going to carry on. However, these could improve as time goes on, so let me know in the comments if you have any success.

Free credit on Vodafone

If you have Vodafone’s VeryMe loyalty app there is often a credit or offer for a rental or sometimes £10 to spend on a selection of movies. These have been less frequent since September. Here’s more about VeryMe and how anyone can get it.

Ratuken

Free rental every month with Times+

Subscribers to the Times newspaper’s digital service can get various freebies, including a free Rakuten rental every month. You actually get 350 points, worth £3.50, so that won’t fully cover HD movies and some new releases. There’s usually either a one month free or three months for £3 trial of Times+. Make sure you cancel before it renews at full price (be warned this has to be done on the phone and can take 10 minutes!).

24 free rentals a year via Halifax

From June 2020 the Halifax Reward account will offer two HD rentals a month – but there are conditions. Here’s more information.

Google Play

Google Play offers are few and far between nowadays, but it’s worth keeping an eye on your account for special promos.

iTunes / Apple Video

If you choose to rent or buy via iTunes then check out the latest iTunes discount codes and offers.

Sport streaming offers

Sky Sports/NOW TV streaming deals

As with the other NOW TV deals I’ve got a dedicated page to all the latest offers and deals.

BT Sport deals

You don’t have to sign up via BT, Sky or Virgin as there’s now a month pass you can sign up for. Again, I’ve got a dedicated page for all BT Sport offers.

Eurosport streaming deals

It’s possible to watch Eurosport online without an annual subscription or service like Sky or Virgin.

Free 7-day trial with Amazon

There’s a free seven-day trial of the online Eurosport Player. To get this trial you also need to be an Amazon Prime member – but that too comes with a free-trial lasting 30-days.

Follow the links below to sign up.

  3. Cashback for Disney+ on Quidco and Topcashback does not seem to be available any more.

    1. Hi Dorit, yes sadly it seemed to end about 4pm. I put a little update note on there earlier. Fingers crossed it comes back!

      1. Hi,
re Disney+ : there is another option if you are a pickmypostcode member. If you sign up through them you get £20 added to your bonus. Obviously you will only get this if you win, but better than nothing (and if you were so lucky and were to win on there twice you get it twice 🙂
